Glass magic Vancouver glass designer and manufacturer Joel Berman is the typical Canadian success story: 98 percent of his business is in the United States. With big clients like Gap, he gets to break new ground with shapes and textures. For this week's International Contemporary Furniture Fair, he showed a kind of shack built of gorgeous slabs of stippled and sculpted glass. His new corrugated finish, which was used in the Gap headquarters rooftop garden, evokes the humble material of shantytowns, but represents about $150,000 in research and development. Berman, who has begun to branch into Germany and Britain, plans to open a permanent showroom next month in Chicago's famed Merchandise Mart Building. "It's a big step for us," he says.
